Milne Family - Margaret and Andrew Hawkshaw (Second generation)

John and Jane's second eldest daughter Margaret was 12 years old when she arrived in New Zealand with her family in 1865. Six years later aged 18 Margaret married Andrew Hawkshaw (m.1871/6714). 

In the electoral year 1970-1971 Andrew is the leaseholder of an address in Tay Street, Invercargill. Possibility Hunter & Hawkshaw a grocery shop which was involved in a great fire which burnt down numerous premises.

Article confirms A. Hawkshaw proprietor of Hunter & Hawkshaw, Frances Lamb was given 14 days jail with hard labour for stealing two blankets (thief as a servant). The following year October 1871 the shop was burnt down.

Andrew Hawkshaw had left the district by 1875.

Sometime after May 1875 Margaret and Andrew emigrate back to Ireland. In the 1901 Irish census they are living in Castle street, Castlebar Urban, County Mayo. Both are listed a Pawnbrokers. In 1911 they have moved to Garryduff (New Town), Castlebar Urban, County Mayo. No mention of children.

Andrew passed in 1917 aged 72, I did come across a obituary from a newspaper someone had posted, but no reference to which newspaper it was from unfortunately, the article mentioned Andrew was to be buried in the Old Town cemetery. I can only assume the Castlebar Old Town cemetery. 

Margaret died aged 77 in Mayo, 1930. Would appear Margaret was good at her job having a tidy sum of money in her estate.

Milne Family - James and Ellen Milne - (Second generation)

John and Jane's fourth son James was 14 years old when he arrived in New Zealand. In 1879 he married Isabella's sister Ellen Dean McColloch (m.1879/1650).

Two children followed John Henry  and Ellen Anne. Sadly in 1882 Ellen, only 22 years old, possibly suffering from post-natal depression and overwhelming exhaustion from raising two young children on her own she drowned her two children and herself in a well.

From 1911 - 1919 a James Milne is recorded as labourer in the electoral district of New Lynn. James died on Christmas Day 1920 in Invercargill age 71 and is buried with his wife and two children at the Eastern Cemetery, Invercargill.

John and Jane Milne (First generation)

The family arrived on the "Jessie Gilbert" which berthed at Bluff in May, 1865, after a voyage which lasted five months. The Milne family proceeded to Invercargill by wagon and spent the first night in the colony in a small hotel in Tay street, called the "Three Bells." The following day they journeyed to Woodlands, the family belongings being transported in bullock and horse-drawn vehicles (taken from William Dawson Milne's obituary).

At the age of 64 John passed away at Long Bush and is buried in the Eastern Cemetery, Invercargill. Mrs Milne survived her husband by 29 years passing on the 23 July 1907 in Mataura, Southland aged 90 years at residence of one of her sons. She is buried with her husband and two of the their daughters Annie Ford and Mary at the Eastern Cemetery, Invercargill.
