Carrick Family

Leaving his home in Glasgow, Scotland at the age of 14, Robert Carrick, father of William McDowall,  sailed to New Zealand in 1848 aboard the Philip Laing.

Robert accompanied his sister Elizabeth and her husband and young child to New Zealand.

In 1860, aged 26 Robert married Catherine Hutton (1840-1877) (m.1860/3042) at the Lawrence Parish. They had five children.

Sadly, when John was only ten and William less than one their father, Robert died aged 38 the result of an accident with a dray. (d.1872/12858)

Two years later, in 1875, Catherine married Robert Livingstone (m.1875/2875). Then only two years later in 1877 aged 37, Catherine dies. John the oldest is now 13 and William 3 years old.

Jessie winning first prize at the Port Molyneux Games in 1879 aged 10 years.

If the lost of their mother and father was not enough, their stepfather Robert dies eight years later in 1885 aged 54. (d.1885/2935). John (23 yrs) is appointed administrator of Robert's estate.




Jessie dies suddenly in Dunedin, at the very young age of 17.

In 1888 Robert (21 yrs) married Marie Vanderhoven (24 yrs) (b. 1864/Ireland d.1953/23215).

A year later Robert and Catherine's eldest child, John drowns aged 27 years old. (d.1889/3024) John was unmarried.

In 1896 Robert Carrick is farming and his wife Marie is teaching at Port Molyneux. In 1911 the move to Glenomaru and remain there until 1919. Robert dies on the 11 September 1936, aged 69 years old and is buried at the Anderson Bay cemetery. Marie paaes in 1953 aged 89 and is buried Waipukurau, Hawke's Bay, New Zealand.
